The Regional Development Agency for Bjelasica, Komovi, and Prokletije in Montenegro organized an extensive event focused on the “katuns”, a traditional practice of transhumant, nomadic cattle and people movement to higher mountain pastures. This ancient tradition, though less prevalent today, still endures in Montenegro and its survival is promisingly linked to its great potential for integration with sustainable mountain tourism.
The Regional Development Agency, as a member of the Cross-Re-Tour project consortium, oversaw the promotion of the project’s ongoing Call for Challenges next to tourism “katuns” (agricultural holdings that practice transhumance and offer tourism services in remote, off-grid mountain areas). As a result, 17 applications were collected, and the applicants will immediately begin assessments for innovation and mentoring. The goal is to upgrade their skills and prepare them for the upcoming Call for Applications at the end of this year, where they can become eligible for financial support of up to €30,000 to implement their own sustainable innovation projects.
This initiative represents a significant step forward in preserving the “katun” tradition while promoting sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship in the region. Learn more about “katuns” here.
