What is this innovation about?
The solution is based on the Bokashi fermentation process that converts organic food waste into soil fertilizer. Organic food waste is added to airtight bins and composters, together with bran with effective microorganisms, which are the key activator of the fermentation process. The bran causes the food to ferment instead of rot and allows the process to break down organic waste efficiently, producing a liquid natural fertilizer.
What’s in it for a tourism SME?
Tourism SMEs can benefit from cost savings by reducing waste disposal costs and minimizing the need to purchase commercial fertilizers. SMEs can reduce waste by as much as 25% and the produced Bokashi liquid can be used as a natural drain cleaner or as a natural fertilizer for plants. Additionally, it enhances the sustainability appeal of the business, attracting environmentally conscious travellers, and providing a unique marketing advantage.
Consider that:
This innovation can also help in meeting waste management regulations and might offer educational opportunities (educate guests about sustainable practices, enhancing their stay and promoting positive environmental behaviours). It might also lower water costs, as Bokashi liquid reduces the need for chemical fertilizers, which require significant water usage, thereby cutting down on water bills.
